We, members of the international community of scholars, strongly condemn the aggressive actions taken by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian sovereignty. The destabilization of the region threatens the international system, endangers the lives of civilians, and presents a real and present danger to peace and security. We identify Vladimir Putin’s weaponization of history as justification for extending Russian claims to Ukrainian territory, in particular, as a common tool deployed by authoritarian leaders throughout the 20th century. It is a craven attempt to lend legitimacy to a fundamentally illegitimate act. What history does teach us is that actions like these bring long standing repercussions that are felt most severely by the most vulnerable, in Ukraine and also in parts of Russia where people are standing up bravely in support of peace. As scholars bound by professional ethics and a responsibility to truth, we the undersigned voice our solidarity with the people of Ukraine and all those who oppose the misuse of historical claims in giving license to war.

  1. History is unforgiving as we have seen in the past and it remembers those who have performed danse macabre on the cinders of civilization or even those who chose to be fence-sitters and neutral in moments of grave urgency and existential crisis. You cannot afford to be narcissistic for the very existence or destruction of humanity is knocking on your door. Time will not absolve you of this war crime that you have perpetrated on innocent Ukrainians but the determination of Ukrainians both men and women, young and old make me offer my salute to them. We have reached a decisive moment in the history of mankind where rogues, despots and tyrants need to be held accountable for gory violence, genocide and mass destruction who in their drunken stupor of power and hubris think that they can mow down human lives, destruct democracies and sovereign nation-states. Long Live Ukraine and Ukrainians.
